Javan Makhmali porfolio of web development and design

Whenever (Ruby Gem)

» Ruby, Open Source

Whenever is an open-source tool for managing cron jobs. It provides a clean DSL for writing cron jobs that is much easier to remember than cron's native syntax and comes with a built-in Capistrano recipe to make deploying them a breeze. Whenever has quickly grown in popularity and is one of the most watched projects on github.

rreset

» Sinatra, Ruby on Rails, Open Source

I originally created rreset because I was unhappy with Flickr's cluttered photo viewing and I wanted something more focused. They have since redesigned so I have stopped development. Created first with Rails and later rewritten with Sinatra / mongoDB. Both are open-source.

TutorSource

» Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, and MySQL

I worked as lead developer on TutorSource, an application that helps students find local tutors and helps tutors manage their business online. Technical highlights include geographical searching, payment processing both incoming and outgoing, and use of Amazon web services. It appears to be down now (I'm no longer involved), but google has many pages cached to view.

Charles Hartman Fine Art

» PHP, CSS, HTML, and MySQL

A clean, standards-based site with a custom CMS that gives Charles complete control over all content and imagery, allows him to create HTML newsletters, and generates an RSS feed to keep customers aware of new additions. Watch a brief screencast of the CMS.

Frazier & Wing

» Ruby on Rails and JavaScript

A Ruby-on-Rails-powered site with an intuitive CMS that allows drag-and-drop reordering, in-place editing, and other javascript sweetness. Watch a screencast of the CMS in action.

Ransom Ceramic Tile

» Design, JavaScript and Open Source

An effective one-page small business site that focuses on what's important: their work. Hosted on tumblr with a Flickr-backed gallery, this site has zero hosting costs. I extracted a general purpose theme from this project and made it free.

Miranda July

» WordPress, CSS, and HTML

Nestled nicely inside of WordPress, which allows complete control over the content (including the big text at the top). I added some additional functionality by creating custom WordPress plugins.

No one belongs here more than you

» PHP and CSS

Miranda July deserves the credit here; I just helped bring the site to the web and keep it alive while it was viewed more than 3 million times in less than a week.

Videobama

» Ruby on Rails and Design

I built this little site for Miranda July and Carrie Brownstein to help raise money for the Barack Obama campaign and to generally raise voter awareness. It has been successful at doing both!

Claire La Faye

» Ruby on Rails, CSS, and JavaScript

Instead of spending time her time resizing images and tinkering with HTML, Claire designs beautiful dresses and lets her CMS do all the work.

Ger-Nis

» HTML, CSS, and PHP

Built with the CodeIgniter framework, this site is fast, lean, and has a cool google map.

Andy Paiko Glass

» PHP, MySQL, Design, HTML, and CSS

Andy Paiko makes really cool art from glass, and I did my best to design him a site and CMS to match.

Kitchen Conference

» PHP, MySQL, CSS, and HTML

This site receives a face lift each year, but is always powered by the stable code base I created, which includes a secure payment gateway. 2007 site and 2006 site

Virtual Interactive Coach

» PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript

A administrative tool for SPARQ to manage data for their interactive coaching program. Watch a brief screencast.

Aranzi Aronzo

» Design and WordPress

I designed this site as a WordPress theme, and have enjoyed watching it grow as visitors leave comments.

Cayuse, INC.

» Design, CSS, and HTML

This standards-based site is highly accessible and search engine friendly. Note: Cayuse has since redesigned their site. I am hosting my version only to demo.

contents may have shifted

» Photography and WordPress

A collection of photographs that I’ve taken over the last couple years.

My portfolio (this site)

» Design and JavaScript

This site has received some kind attention for its simple, single page design on CSSMania, screenfluent, One Page Love, Daily Slurp, and more.
